Michigan!

What a glorious morning! I slept in a nest of pillows until after six and Leary made my way to breakfast. I sat with Jim, Nate and J.C and we talked about winter sports and climate changes, lack of snow in France, fires in Colorado and how strange Chicago was during Covid. I sipped a latte. At eleven we rode three miles, past the Allen Bradley clock to the ferry dock and were soon on board. Most of our group ate their sandwiches before we shoved off. Once we passed the breakwater, the ride began. The swells were 5-8 feet and really made that boat sway. By the midpoint those little white paper bags laid out on the tables for us were getting used. To my right, left and right across from me. Stewards were passing out wrist pressure point bands, meclizine medication and ginger candies. That’s when I made my way up to the deck for the fresh air and prolonged staring at the horizon. We were happy to be on terra firma in Muskegon!

37 miles and 2ish hours of light to our goal of Holland, MI. Most of the ride was straight south on 31 and beautiful. Fall is upon us with trees changing color and there is a chill in the air. Once in a while the canopy of trees opened up and there’d be a glimpse of the shimmering lake to the right and the spectacle of a setting sun that was orange and pink. So pretty.

Unfortunately another fall, this time (Mega) Mike who we encountered maybe a second after he fell and was splayed out in the sidewalk after hitting a pole and miscalculating the rise of a curb. Thankfully he’s doing ok and was able to finish the day. Whew. I mean his name is Mega, and even HE can crash on a flat road.

Again I got to see Colette and Matt on their Michigan vaca. Thanks for the visit! Also I met Dan’s mom- she’s a spunky 95 year old staying with his sister in Michigan. They had an Old Fashioned station at our pizza party tonight.

What a day. 92 miles tomorrow and rain.
